The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was convicted of plotting a armed takeover in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.
This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns
In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said information from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.
His child, Flávio, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the potential of the former president's transfer to embassies near the home, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The legal document emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist US President Donald Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to leave his home for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Background on Conviction
He was found guilty of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without problem on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The magistrates found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was intended to stop him competing in the next presidential race.
