Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant blasts shaking Tehran, amid statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in Central Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, though it did not initially provide further details.
Background: Rising Tensions and Prior Developments
This event occurs against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the region. Key events preceding this attack involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of American warships in the Middle East, featuring the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest talks between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with indications of more discussions planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the attack, a senior US official had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been given to Iran to resolve the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials rejected claims about weapons development and casualty figures as unfounded.
The situation is fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
